For What It’s Worth: Fish Oil

Competitive athletes, recreational athletes, weekend worries and non-athletes are all talking about Fish Oil. Is Fish Oil just the next trend or is it a valuable addition to your supplement schedule?

As much as 90% of the American population is deficient in good fats, such as those found in fish oil. While the National Institutes of Health highly recommends fish oil (and other omega-3 sources) only for hypertriglyceridemia, cardiovascular disease, and high blood pressure, there may be a benefit for the rest of us.
Research has shown that “fish oil decreases muscle breakdown, decreases inflammation, increases muscle growth, speeds recovery time, supports hormone secretion, and supports healthy joints and connective tissue”. Experts recommend 2 - 9 grams of fish oil to prevent deficiencies and 9 -18 grams per day to support optimal health and performance. Ask your health care professional if you would benefit from adding a fish oil supplement to your meal time.
